PART 3:

Rory is still fired up about her second Times article and the whole new creative landscape she’s unlocked since she began writing about the pressure of being an unplanned child

She doesn’t see that she‘s worsened Lorelai’s spiral: first about feeling like something is missing in her life, she and Luke should have tried harder to have a baby or adopted, and really it’s just her grief for her dad manifesting in more digestible ways

But now she’s starting to spiral about how she raised Rory. “Did I put too much pressure on her? It always seemed like Rory was putting the pressure on herself and I was trying to get her to stop, but where did that pressure even come from in the first place? It was just the two of us, so where else would it have come from? ” she panics. Luke asks how much coffee she’s had. It’s the same as always, but this is the first time that Lorelai has genuinely questioned her parenting

“I was so focused on not being by parents that maybe I missed something” she reaches for more coffee anyway

Rory meets Jess in New York. “So… You mentioned there might be a book in this?” she asks casually. He gives her one of those big, wide Jess smiles. ”It’s about time you wrote your own, you’ve read everything else”. They start planning out what the book would look like

She catches up with Paris whilst she’s there. Paris is initially a bit dismissive of the book idea. “We could all write a book about how our parents screwed up”. But in the end, she’s happy if Rory’s happy and glad that she’s actually doing something. “The nomadic freelancer thing when you’re over 30 is just sad, I mean, most people have a baby and a mortgage by now”. Rory dismisses it. “I’m not there yet. It‘s taken me a long time to find my topic, something that feels really true to me, and now I’ve got it I’m not concentrating on anything else”

In between meetings, she has a call with Lorelai. They’re distant with each other. Or rather, Rory is too wrapped up and excited, Lorelai is distant and unsure, still coming to terms with the fact that she feels like she failed Rory. She politely asks questions, about how it’s going, who Rory is meeting and so on

She eventually mentions that Christopher came for dinner recently. “It was bad, there was a fight. You know how it is“ Lorelai gently mentions that Rory should call him to check in. “Well just to see how he’s doing after your article“. “Huh, why?” Rory doesn’t understand. Lorelai explains that he might have felt a little hurt by it. The tensions that have been simmering away finally come to the surface. Rory is shouting into her phone (just the one - no one needs all the phones she apparently had) in the middle of the city. Lorelai is arguing back in the middle of Stars Hollow after promptly vacating the diner, only too happy to abide by Luke‘s rule now this has turned into a full-blown argument

“If you weren’t happy about the article then you should have said!” Rory shouts. “Yeah well if you weren’t happy then you should have said something in the 30+ years that I’ve been your mother!” Lorelai shouts back

They hang up. They haven’t had a fight this bad in a long, long time. Rory impulsively calls Logan. “I’m coming to London. I need to come to London” she tells him. ”Ah sorry Ace, it’s not a good time for me” he replies, as Odette is there and talking to Logan about getting divorced. It’s time

Rory, who still hasn’t quite figured out how to handle an argument without doing something vaguely reckless, goes to visit Emily at Cape Cod or the Vineyard (wherever they bought their holiday home). No call, no text, she’s just there on the doorstop. Emily doesn’t falter though. “Come in, come in”

Over tea, Rory explains about her second Times article. “Oh that’s wonderful news, you’re really becoming a favourite there” Emily smiles. Rory then tells her about the fight with Lorelai. “I figured we were sort of passed that point” she sighs. “Well, if it’s anything like your mother and I, you never get passed that point” Emily admits

Not one to dwell on things for long, Emily ushers Rory up. “How about a walk, or a trip to the bookshop?” It’s not so different from their European holiday together

But by the time they sit down for dinner together, Rory still doesn’t know what to do. “I know this is what I’m supposed to be doing, this is exactly what I should be writing. But I can’t seem to settle anywhere. Paris and Lane, they have a house and children and what do I have? I’m living with my mother and we’re not even talking right now”

Emily’s got an idea, you can tell from the way her eyes snap up. “I’ve got it” she says. “You should have our house. Just for a little while anyway, until things settle down a bit. I’m sure it’ll be a wonderful place to write too”

Rory isn’t sure. It’s so full of memories of Richard, things she’s been avoiding. “It’s strange” she pauses, “I don’t want to go back there because I can’t face the fact that I’ll never see him again. But I keep wanting to go back to make sure that I don’t forget any of these memories. It’s like avoiding him and wanting to revisit every memory I have of him at the same time“. She breaks down. “I can’t do it anymore Grandma”

For once, Emily doesn’t try to corral her into an activity or different conversation to avoid the emotion. She just reaches out and holds Rory’s hand. “Go back to the house. Stay there as long as you need to”

A cab driver drops Rory outside that big imposing house, looking up at it like she did as a child

She walks through the whole house, looking at every room and remembering her grandpa. She heads to the pool house, where they once both lived (at separate times). Emily has had it redone a dozen times since Rory lived there and now she wishes that it was exactly the way it was when Richard was there. She drags the drinks trolley into the pool house. It’s not much, but it’s a little reminder of Richard that makes him feel closer again

Rory wakes up the next morning in the pool house to her phone buzzing. It’s Jess, he’s outside and wondering where she is. She dashes out to see him, her eyes faintly red from crying, finally beginning to process Richard’s death. “I thought we could talk about the book” but on seeing Rory’s face he asks if they should just have a drink instead. ”Or maybe you could give me a tour? I’ve never been here without having to sneak around before” he laughs

They pour a glass and cheers to Richard, using the glasses from his study. Rory shows him every room, even the basement, which is still full of things from her great grandmother, Lorelai the First. Jess takes it all in. “All useful for the book” he muses

”I don’t know“ Rory sighs, “This whole thing has caused a huge fight between my mom and me. I just wanted to write something that would mean something to people, something that would cut through all the disasters in the news, you know? And now all I can think is what if I’ve ruined everything with my mom forever? I mean, she’s right. Imagine your kid writing a piece in the Times about how they know they’re were a mistake and felt like they had to prove themselves every day… I know you don’t have a kid but you know what I mean” It’s Rory’s turn to spiral

“Look, did you mean to hurt your mom when you wrote that article?” Jess questions her. She shakes her head, taking another sip of her drink. “Exactly. You told the truth. You wrote about something important. You put it into words. That’s what you are supposed to do. It’s not always nice for the people around you, but you have to do it anyway. Besides, it could have been worse. Remind me to tell you about my author who grew up in a golf dynasty, went pro and then wrote a book about how much he hated golf in excruciating detail” Jess smirks

“So you think I should keep writing” Rory asks

”I think you have to” he replies simply

He puts the glass down, he has to get back to New York. They hug goodbye, Jess squeezing her shoulders as he tells her to call if she needs anything

Rory shuts that vast, heavy door. It seems odd. It’s always Emily who shuts the front door. She and Lorelai had gotten so good at working about how Emily was really feeling just from the way she would shut the door after their Friday night dinners

She listens to the sound of the door, trying to get a handle on her own emotions, but it’s still a mess

So she heads to the study instead. The portrait of her is still on the wall. It’s comically large, making Rory want to laugh at it and ask her grandma what on Earth she was thinking. But there’s something so touching in knowing how many times Richard would have looked up from his desk to see her, in portrait form

And so, at last, she begins to write

”Yeah I’m here, what’s up? Yeah.. you don’t have to shout, mom, I can hear you just fine” Lorelai rolls her eyes as she stands in the hallway on the phone. “What? You saw Rory? What are you talking about?”

”Calm down Lorelai. I’m just calling to let you know that Rory came to stay with me. I told her that she can stay at our place for as long as she needs. I believe she got there yesterday. I just thought you would like to know” Emily tells her, in her usual brisk manner, but there’s an undercurrent of warmth and kindness in her voice

Lorelai sniffs, she’s been close to tears for the last few days. “What do you think I should do mom?” she asks quietly

“Give her time. Let her cool off and then she’ll talk. You two are never apart for long” Emily replies, that same longing in her voice that’s always there whenever she talks about Lorelai and Rory’s relationship

They hang up, and Luke walks into the hallway, gently rubbing Lorelai’s back. “She’s right” he sighs, “Although if you ever hear me agreeing with your mother again then you have full permission to laugh at me”

”Aw, thanks” Lorelai replies, thinking about how she laughs at Luke anyway
