When did the Van Craze of the 70's end? Was it abrupt or more of a steady decline?

Was it abrupt or more of a steady decline? Genuinely curious, a friend has an 81' Dodge Street Van that I'm helping him tune up and I'm surprised that you could still get a dealer factory Street Van in the early 80's when it seemed to be more of a 70's fad.
