Is it possible to play with a friend when he has Bedrock beta, when I have Java?

We wanted to play together, but not only do we have different versions, but he also has a beta and doesn't know if it's safe to change versions on bedrock (I heard that it's not possible or you could lose worlds). Is there a way to do this without losing the world? Or something like the beta, but in Java? I don't know.

(We both bought the game)
