Is a platonic marriage THAT unrealistic? 28F, 31M
My wife (28F) and I (31M) are in the process of divorcing — she ended things last week — and while some of that is struggling to get out of argument cycles, it has really become clear to both of us in the last few days that a major reason for splitting is we have just really changed as people since we met in 2021 and that we may not be romantically compatible anymore or ever.
I have become even more of a homebody and she is more driven, outgoing, and extroverted than ever before and always out of the house. She has a higher sex drive than me and likes more physical touch and affection than im capable of giving.
Anyway the plan has been for me to move out but we both kind of jokingly (?) suggested today a platonic marriage where we stay living together and have our own relationships.
I’m not a very jealous person and the idea of her with other people has never really bothered me honestly. I don’t know why but it hasn’t. And she’s the one ending things so I doubt she’d be bothered by me with people. We would still be getting our sexual and romantic needs from others.
How bad of an idea is this? Or is this something that’s actually doable?
I fully recognize this could be a last-ditch and desperate attempt to keep my living situation the same and to stay with her and keep our two dogs together and that’s it absolutely not the norm, especially without kids. But I’ve also processed the divorce a lot easier than I thought I would in recent days and suddenly this doesn’t sound so insane, especially given we wouldn’t be remotely exclusive.
I know it would be an impediment to dating in the future and at some point whether it’s kids or a real marriage, it would end. But is it all that crazy in the short-term?
