I am Julien Guillemette, the music composer of Pluralys, a narrative RPG with over 50 tracks and 2h of music [AMA]

Blog / Vlog

Hi Reddit! My name is Julien Guillemette. I was the lead music composer and sound designer for the narrative RPG Pluralys, a project I worked on for six months. AMA!

I actually got this job right after finishing my bachelor’s degree. I was randomly browsing Indeed looking for opportunities, submitted a pitch, met the project lead… and got the gig! It was an amazing experience, and the dev team basically gave me “carte blanche” for the music.

I was initially hired to compose around 10–15 tracks, but by the end, I had written over 50 tracks and nearly 2 hours of music in a wide range of styles! The game is currently in Early Access on Steam and is scheduled for full release in the few months.

A bit about my background:

I’m based in Quebec, Canada. I completed a CEGEP degree in jazz guitar with a specialization in studio recording and music composition. After that, I went to university for music composition for media (film, video games, advertising), and I’m currently pursuing a DESS (similar to a master’s degree, but without a thesis) in music composition.

During my studies, I participated in a LOT of game jams and student projects to gain hands-on experience in real-time interactive music. I also spent a lot of time learning Wwise and game engines like Unity so I could implement music myself, whether through Wwise integration or directly in-engine with code.

So yeah! I wanted to create this thread for anyone interested in getting into game music composition. Feel free to ask me anything about VSTs, DAWs, implementation, game jams, breaking into the industry, or whatever you’re curious about.

I know how hard it can be to get started in this field, especially right now, and it’s easy to feel lost. So don’t hesitate, ask away! :D
