What languages does TAM marking have the heaviest functional load in?

My guess would be that TAM would have a heavier functional load in Spanish than English because of the verbs whose English translation depends on tense. For example, the distinction between conocía and conoció is one of TAM in Spanish. English instead distinguishes the lexical verbs "know" and "meet" in their translations: "I knew" and "I met".
