Reason to reverse polarity on an outlet?

Google tells me “no,” but is there ANY reason why someone would intentionally reverse polarity on a residential outlet??

I was swapping out crappy looking cream-colored outlets for white yesterday and twice (out of only four) found the black hot wires had been wired to the silver screws and my plug sensor was showing a reverse polarity.

I feel like the previous owner probably wasn’t an idiot … but maybe he was?? Is there ANY reason to purposefully do that??
