Hi there! I had this review pending since the start of the year has been pretty packed with new models and they were starting to pile up. But today, after quite a few days of testing (more than usual), I’m finally bringing you my take on the TRN Whale Shark. We all know TRN keeps dropping countless models for every price bracket, sometimes hitting the mark and sometimes not, but keep an eye on this "Whale Shark." On paper, it’s a beastly hybrid setup that promises a lot for the price. With a hybrid design, it certainly looks great on paper, and I can tell you that having spent a lot of time with them (swapping filters, testing thoroughly), it has definitely been one of the more intense experiences of late  to say the least!

**The Best**

**The Worst**

# Specs from TRN Website

# My Sources

To give you some context, I always use these three pillars for my tests:

# Unboxing, Build, and Accessories

The design really catches your eye in a good way. It's made of liquid metal not a material we see every day, as we're more used to aluminum or resin but it looks genuinely beautiful. If the light hits the inside just right, you can see these blue gems. Honestly, it was a struggle to capture them in photos because the outer shell shadows them, forcing me to crank up the camera exposure, but I hope you can see them properly because it’s worth it. They are big. They have a "hump" on the inner side for ergonomics that fits me well, but it’s definitely a bulky earphone that you’ll feel while wearing. Everything comes in a pretty premium presentation. The first thing that hits you is the rectangular hard case, it’s plastic but very solid, protecting the IEMs like they’re bomb-proof. Inside, we find the modular cable with the three connectors (3.5, 2.5, and 4.4mm) and a metal plate where the extra nozzles are screwed in.

They didn't skimp on the eartips either there are about 7 or 8 different pairs. You get TRN’s famous T-Eartips that grip perfectly, foam tips, and several sets of wide and narrow-bore silicone. It’s almost impossible not to find a perfect seal with everything included, and this time I didn't even bother trying tips from my own collection since the T-Eartips usually get the job done.

# Synergy and Sources

Even though they’re very sensitive on paper, they appreciate a clean source to keep that planar driver from acting out...

# Sound Signature

The soul of this model lies in the nozzles. I did most of my testing with the Green (Reference) nozzle, which feels like the sweet spot. The Red (Atmospheric) nozzle bumps up the bass and kills some of the treble shimmer, while the Black (Transparent) is for detail freaks (and those who don't mind some ear fatigue if the volume is too high). The black nozzle has so much high frequency that I can only handle a brief period before I get tired. The details on the red nozzle didn't meet my expectations. I primarily used the green nozzle for tests because the performance of the red nozzle fell short of what I was looking for. If these IEMs had a fixed nozzle design, they should come stock with the sound included in this green nozzle, as it achieves a much better balance from one end of the spectrum to the other.

# Sub-bass and bass

The dynamic driver is in charge here, and you can tell. We’ve got sub-bass with good extension and a physical vibration you can actually feel without it being over the top. The mid-bass has punch, it's impactful and fun. It’s not the fastest bass out there (compared to a BA driver), as it has that slightly slower, more natural decay typical of dynamics. With the red nozzle, this enters "basshead" territory keeping things in perspective, of course, as this isn't strictly a model for that crowd.

# Mids and vocals

Though the low-mid range from the 6mm drivers has a good amount of weight to male vocals and guitars, there seems to be a slight separation of the sounds between the mid and treble part of the sound. This seems common with hybrids. The female vocals do have great overall clarity and presence, but somtimes comes off with an artificial sound and does not capture my attention. This is a very clean sound coming from the IEMs and is very analytical, but the vocals lack a little bit of the “depth” to make them sound even better. Through my experience and in performance reviews, I prefer to have vocals in the mix created further back.

# Treble and air

This is where the Whale Shark justifies that planar driver. The lower treble has a ton of energy and attack. Cymbals and metallic details come through very clearly. The air extension is fantastic for this price, you really notice the space in the recording. That said, it’s a treble that doesn’t forgive. If the mix is bad, it’ll fatigue you fast regardless of the nozzle. It’s technically impressive, but you have to enjoy a bright sound. Personally, I like an airier, extended treble that isn't too piercing, the green nozzle worked for me to tame that planar shimmer, though some might need to go straight for the red one.

# Soundstage, Image, and Separation

**Soundstage** The stage width is surprisingly good on the horizontal axis, giving you a very clear sense of lateral space that keeps the music from feeling boxed in. It’s great for hearing effects expand outside your head, though that width isn't matched by much depth. The stage feels a bit frontal, like you’re in the front row of a very wide concert but without feeling the air coming from behind the musicians.

**Image** Positioning is very precise, and it's incredibly easy to pinpoint every instrument in the stereo field with great clarity. If a sound moves, the Whale Shark tracks it without any blurry spots. My only "less positive" note is that sometimes this precision is so surgical that instruments feel a bit isolated in their own space, losing a touch of that warmth in favor of absolute clarity for every track. For some, I doubt this is even a negative.

**Instrumental Separation** The model excels in this aspect and delivers superior performance in terms of separating. When used, there is absolutely zero loss of separation each layer will sound as though it was performed completely solo, even when lots of instruments are playing simultaneously. The clarity of instruments is remarkable, regardless of the intensity of a song because of Speedy planar drivers' ability to break down sound into its constituent parts with just one note being played at once, they deliver exceptional separation ability. You’ll hear every nuance, texture and frequency distinctly well, the result is that you'll find previously undiscovered depth within your previously loved songs!

# Musical Test

To really push the Whale Shark, I dove into the new arrivals in my Apple Music library and playlists. It’s been a journey of contrasts, and a few tracks really stood out.

Starting with "Umbra" by Ghost they just dropped the music video and it’s one of the best on the new album the planar driver blew me away with how it positioned those operatic choirs and synth textures. It’s amazing how it separates the atmospheric layers without the bass and drums (which hit with a very heavy rock vibe) muddying Tobias’s vocals.

However, switching to something completely different like "OK Without You 2026" by Klaas, I noticed that all that energy in the treble can be a double-edged sword. The detail in the electronic effects is surgical, and the beryllium dynamic driver moves air so well you can almost feel the beat hitting your ear, but that sharp TRN extension in the highs can get a bit aggressive if you push the volume too high.

With "Cobblestones" by The Lathums, these IEMs feel right at home. The instrumental separation lets the acoustic guitar breathe with fantastic air and clarity, though I did miss a bit more "soul" or organic warmth in the vocals, as the Whale Shark tends to sound a bit analytical and cold in the mids.

Finishing with "I Just Might" by Bruno Mars, I was floored by how clean the production sounds. There’s zero congestion despite the amount of instruments and arrangements. Even though the shells are a bit chunky and heavy, the immersion they offer with these types of bright, rhythmic vocals is spectacular. Ultimately, the Whale Shark shines brightest with electronic pop, soundtracks, and modern rock, where that layer separation and controlled bass punch really make a difference.

Where these IEMs might not win any awards is in radically different genres, like old-school Jazz recorded with a single mic or raw Blues. There, that extreme TRN sharpness can feel unnatural almost artificial because those genres call for a "dirtier" sound.

# Comparisons

**Simgot SuperMix 4:** This was and still is a flagship for the brand, though it never stood out much to me. It follows the Harman curve, everything sounds "correct," smooth, and in its place. It’s much safer and more natural. The Whale Shark is the rebel: more aggressive, more bass, more treble more V-shaped. If you want to relax: Simgot. If you want to analyze details and feel the punch: Whale Shark. Also, TRN wins the accessory game by a landslide.

**Ziigaat Doscinco:** The Doscinco is all about darkness and power. Even though it's one of the Ziigaats I liked the least, it had a more interesting tuning for me than the Supermix. It’s a warm IEM with bass that rattles your brain but much more relaxed highs. The Whale Shark sounds almost strident next to the Doscinco, but it has way more micro-detail.

**AFUL Performer 5+2:** You can really feel the jump in price and maturity here. AFUL manages to integrate the drivers in a way TRN just can't, though the price gap makes the comparison a bit unfair. In the Performer, everything sounds like a single unit, in the Whale Shark, you sometimes notice the transition between drivers. The AFUL is more organic and real. The TRN is more spectacular on the first listen, but the AFUL wins on long sessions for its naturalness.

**TRN Starfish:** The rowdy little brother. It’s a very raw V-shape, fun for the gym, but "dirty." The bass bleeds into the mids and the treble is unrefined. Switching to the Whale Shark after the Starfish is like someone lifting a veil: everything becomes defined, the bass tightens up, and a stage opens up that the Starfish just doesn't have.

In my classic personal mini-ranking, the Whale Shark lands right here:

# Final Thoughts

The TRN Whale Shark is a bold move. For around $130-$140 (depending on deals), you get a luxury accessory kit, tank-like build, and a sound that while not the most natural is technically impressive in separation and detail.

I think they’re ideal for anyone looking for a critical listening experience without spending way more, or for those who enjoy electronic music and soundtracks where spectacularity matters more than the organic timbre of a human voice. If you have big ears and enjoy swapping filters, it's a very fun buy. For those interested in this model, you can find it on their official website:[ https://trn-audio.com/trn-whale-shark.html](https://trn-audio.com/trn-whale-shark.html). If you’re looking for smoothness and relaxation, there are other options out there…

Thanks again for reading "The Bible." TRN already has another promising model on the way, though that review will take a bit longer as I have other things to check out first… let the party continue!

**Disclaimer:** This unit was sent by TRN for review. They didn't have any say in my script, nor was I paid. They didn't give it to me for free either, I got a heavy discount, which anyone who’s collabed with them knows. Everything I’m telling you is my honest experience, based on my ears and my own quirks... I invite you to leave your comments and questions below!
