Every Great One yearns for a surrogate

SpoilerDiscussion

❗This is actually my very first Reddit post, and I really wanted to share my insight with others. Just a quick heads-up: English isn't my first language, so I used an AI to help me articulate and format this post clearly, but the actual theory, ideas, and the cosmic dread behind it are entirely my own! I haven't seen this exact theory posted anywhere else, so if there's lore that supports or completely debunks it, please let me know. I’m not looking to debate, just wanted to share this dark headcanon with people who love the lore. ❗

Hello everyone. I just got the platinum trophy today for this masterpiece after indulging in this for 3 whole months and getting a bit too much into the lore and about the cosmic horrors in this game and as a whole and Ive been into it too much by myself I thought I was going to insane with no one I could talk to about this and having no friends of mine that play souls games and so I wanted to reach out to the bb community and have you guys correct me and give me your ideas and criticism, anyways its about the secret (true) ending where we become an infant great one.

  1. The Mortal Surrogate Problem The lore explicitly states that every Great One loses its child and yearns for a surrogate. But we see what happens when they choose mortals: Queen Yharnam died, and Arianna’s mind was completely shattered. A fragile human shell simply cannot handle the incomprehensible cosmic weight of a Great One's infant. The system always fries.

  2. The Tragedy of Gehrman as the First Surrogate We know exactly how the Moon Presence operates. When Gehrman originally beckoned it, the Moon Presence created the Dream and trapped Gehrman in it to act as its surrogate child and anchor. He was a prisoner. If we don't eat the Umbilical Cords, the Moon Presence simply binds us to the wheelchair to replace him. It always needs a host.

  3. The Moon Presence’s "Test" When we consume the three Cords, the Moon Presence can no longer mind-control us. But the boss fight itself almost feels... too easy for a multidimensional god. Specifically, its attack that drops our HP to exactly 1, but leaves us a window to rally and heal. What if it wasn't a fight to the death? What if it was testing us? It realized we had enough cosmic insight to finally be a vessel strong enough to survive the merging process without our minds completely shattering.

  4. We Didn't Fight the "Real" God (The Avatar Theory) Cosmic beings exist in higher dimensions. The physical, bleeding monster we fight in the Dream likely isn't the totality of the Moon Presence, but just a 3D physical avatar or fragment it pushed into our reality to interact with us. We see this exact concept with Amygdala, who can manifest as dozens of different physical bodies simultaneously across the Waking World and the Nightmare. We didn't kill a god; we just destroyed the physical "glove" it was wearing.

  5. We Never Escaped the Dream When we "kill" the Moon Presence after eating the cords, the screen fades, and we see our new form as an infant Great One (the slug). But look at where we are: we are still in the Hunter's Dream. We didn't break out into the cosmos to free humanity; we were born directly into the Moon Presence's dimension, immediately scooped up by the Doll.

My Takeaway: In Lovecraftian horror, humanity never wins. I think the Moon Presence manipulated us into gathering that ultimate power, tested our durability in combat, and allowed its physical avatar to be destroyed. Why? So its true, formless cosmic essence could seamlessly transfer into us—the freshly ascended, perfectly durable infant Great One we just grew for it. Gehrman was the old battery for the Dream, and we just took his place. We didn't outsmart an ancient god; we were just the ultimate incubator.

I really wanted to put this thought out there, and I'd absolutely love to hear your views on this! Did anyone else get this incredibly bleak vibe from the ending? May you find your worth in the waking world.
