Hematologist for low Hematocrit & Hemoglobin?

My husband’s annual labs have come back showing low hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. When his PCP emailed the results, he didn’t explain anything other recommending my husband see a hematologist. When we looked at his labs last year, we noticed it also showed low hematocrit and hemoglobin levels but his doctor never mentioned anything about it then and it was never discussed in office. After some research, I see that low rbc could possibly be due to anemia, which would be indicated by iron levels, which for some reason his PCP never tested for on the last wellness visit or the years prior, so we don’t know what his levels are. He has no symptoms so I’m wondering if seeing a hematologist is jumping the gun? He has a scheduled appointment to see one this week and before even talking to the doctor, the billing department already gave him a slew of CPT codes for lab tests that were pre-emptively ordered for his visit, including a very expensive ultrasound. Does this seem like a lot up front? Should he instead request his PCP to run iron tests to see if that is the culprit before seeing a specialist?
