Deaf and CODA medical professionals do exist, options for consults
Hey folks, I just wanted to provide a bit of awareness again and I really want to shout out to the Pitt because I really appreciate Noah Wyle doing his best to bring multiple marginizalied communities to the forefront.
I wanted to let yall know that there’s currently an organization based in the US but that is worldwide.
It’s called “Association for medical professionals with a hearing loss.” AMPHL for the acronym.
They have conferences every 2-3 years I believe. Next one is in Florida in April. They have experts from the deaf community present on relevant topics.
That organization has a list of deaf professionals who are experts in various fields.
One of the tenets of doing this job is consults at times. I wish more people would actually reach out to the deaf community and ask us for support when you meet our patients. Especially if you’re not sure of baseline or language challenges.
My point of this post is to point out that there’s already places to turn to.
Currently one deaf doctor and one hearing doctor (who is a CODA, child of deaf parents and fluent) and working on translating some medical information into ASL.
Dr IV Mirus is one of those doctors and he’s working on an ASL telemedicine services but I think that’s US based. Dr. Zach Featherstone is another one who is his deaf counterpart working to help. Shout out to them!
