Two Years Into Alzheimer’s — We Had a Crossword Moment Again
My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s two years ago (July). It’s been a slow but steady decline.
A couple months ago, I went down the rabbit hole looking for anything that might help. I came across research discussing methylene blue and MCT oil. At this point, I would try almost anything for one more real conversation before things go quiet.
We started:
Methylene blue diluted in water (~15 mL once daily)
MCT oil — 2 teaspoons once daily
When we briefly increased the MCT oil, he developed loose stools, so we reduced it back down. Since lowering it, that issue resolved.
About a week ago, I thought I noticed a subtle change, but I didn’t want to assume anything. I watched closely.
Last night confirmed it for me.
After he went to bed, I sat in his chair and noticed a crossword puzzle from the Illinois Times next to it. Five years ago, crosswords were something we loved doing together. Over the past year, he stopped completely — reading, puzzles, following movies. His attention span shortened significantly.
Last Thursday, I filled in about a quarter of the crossword and left it beside his chair. Honestly, I didn’t think he’d even pick it up.
But he did.
And he filled in multiple clues I hadn’t gotten yet.
I don’t know if it’s the methylene blue, the MCT oil, the combination, or coincidence. I’m not claiming this is a cure. I’m just sharing what we experienced.
Something shifted.
For the first time in a while, it felt like I got a small piece of my dad back.
If this gives even one caregiver a little hope — or one more conversation with their loved one — it’s worth sharing.
