Can’t decide between two devices?

What To Buy?

I’ve lurked here for a while. Learned from others not to ask *too* dumb questions and did my homework as instructed and attempted the reading. While I definitely learned things, I’m confident I understand maybe 20% of what I read well enough to explain it to someone else. Maybe 18%.

I’ve narrowed my choice down to a radiacode 110 or the GMC-600 plus but I can’t decide between them.

I like glowy rocks and glass. I have aaalll the UV lights (255, 330, 365, 395), and a fluorescent bulb I use for neodymium (which is my favorite in glass). But now I want to know, in much greater detail, what is IN the glow. So that means gamma ray spectroscopy. I think. Maybe.

So reading about these two, I’m stuck. What I’m reading says gmc 600 plus is better for people looking for radioactive antiques and glass, that the pancake is more sensitive to finding radiation, that the radiacode can’t detect alpha at all, that the GMC can pick up contamination and “sweep” for things that the Radiacode will miss.

But with the radiacode being a spectrometer, does it really matter that it doesn’t pick up alpha? I can’t figure out how that will actually limit me, for what I’m doing.

Wouldn’t the Radiacode be fine at picking up on spicy things AND be able to tell me what’s in them? Because I don’t just want uranium. I want to find thorium and radium and I want to know if glass has manganese or selenium or cadmium or cerium or neodymium or something else entirely in it. And that doesn’t even touch the possibilities of what’s in a rock!

And if I haven’t read enough yet, I’ll take my lumps and go back to school - but maybe toss me a little hint at what else to read? Because I’m a little tired and a little frustrated. I’m also a little spoiled and not used to things not making sense almost immediately.
