Is there any possibility that I'm on the aromantic spectrum? (I'm also open to sharing experiences)
Hi everyone, this is my first post here and I decided to do this because I have a lot of questions and I'd like to take advantage of the fact that we're in Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week. I'll try to explain my current situation and I would be very grateful if you could give me some opinion (I've been unsure about being on the aromantic spectrum for a few months now).
I (I'm a woman) have always really liked romance (books and series) and have had several crushes (on boys), which I'm not sure if they were really romantic crushes (when I remember these situations, it seems that I really acted like a person in love and I felt strong emotions, but I don't remember thinking that I wanted a romantic relationship with these boys). I found the person aesthetically attractive and felt the need to get to know them better and be close to them.
My current situation is that I've been dating a boy (we're both 17) for almost 11 months, but many things that are incomprehensible to me have happened since we started this relationship. I just wanted to comment that, before we started dating, he was someone I found aesthetically attractive (in fact, I'm almost certain I'm asexual) and I think the relationship came more as a consequence of time and people asking about it (I don't think I was really thinking about it).
Anyway, in the beginning everything was good and perfect. I liked kissing him (sometimes a little more, but nothing too far) and meeting up with him. But everything changed after about 3 months of dating. Suddenly what I call the "strange phase" began (I really don't remember having any trigger for it), because from then on it was as if everything I felt for him before no longer existed.
So I started feeling suffocated by normal things in a relationship, like going out with him (I started making excuses that didn't even make much sense), kissing him (sometimes I felt disgusted and nauseous and only did it because otherwise he would get sad), and I had strange thoughts that I didn't understand (examples: "I didn't want to be dating now" and "I hope he doesn't come to school today").
I think I didn't have these thoughts all the time, but I was worried about how often they happened. This phase ended mysteriously (there was no trigger for it either) after 3 months of distancing myself from him, then suddenly I became more affectionate with him and seemed happier.
The difference is that since then I haven't felt like kissing him, I don't care about going out together (he's always the one suggesting we do something together), and I think I see many things as a "fair exchange" (I do something for him because he does something for me, and I know that if I don't do the minimum, he'll be hurt).
I started seeing a psychologist in December, and both she and my boyfriend say that I treat him like a friend and not my romantic partner. In fact, my boyfriend says that many times I seem to care more about my friends than about him (I thought that might be a relevant point).
Honestly, maybe they're right, but I'm still a little hesitant to break up with him (maybe because I feel attached to him in a way and I know we won't stay in touch afterwards), but I also know that I would only be wasting his time (I don't think I can offer him what he needs in a relationship, even in future plans).
- By the way, this is both of our first relationships and at the beginning of November we had a "breakup" that lasted less than 2 weeks. Many times I also don't understand when he does or says something romantic or I simply decide that it's better to pretend I didn't understand.
Sorry for the long text, but I would like to provide a lot of detail so that you could understand me well and maybe tell me if you think there is any possibility that I am on the aromantic spectrum or that something else could be happening. Thank you for your attention 🫶🏼
