How important is networking for getting a job in law?

I'm a prelaw trying to become a paralegal or legal assistant for several years and I've had a lot more luck reaching out to alumni of my undergrad and asking for help than I have with straight up applying. I've always heard networking is how lawyers get jobs and how good lawyers be good lawyers. I guess I wanted to hear y'all's thoughts.
