middle grade fantasy novel with green cover (playing cards)??
i was a huuge reader as a kid, and i tore through basically every book at my local library. every summer, they would have a summer reading challenge, and if you read a certain number of books/hours, you'd get different prizes and stuff...
i'm mentioning this because i distinctly remember the vaguest of details for one of those books i read for the summer reading program. i would've been in middle school at the time, which would put us in the late 2000's to early 2010's, and the book was fairly new/contemporary when i read it.
here's what i remember:
-the cover was green, i think, with a design that somehow incorporated playing cards (this detail keeps sticking out to me)
-the mc is a boy who comes from a dysfunctional family; i wanna say his parents or possibly uncle/aunt are alcoholics, and the family has some kind of generational curse or something along those lines
-i can't remember much else about the plot.... i'm assuming that the boy goes on some sort of quest/journey to break the curse, and he may discover he has some sort of powers along the way, but the details aren't clear.
i know this doesn't give you much to go off of, but unfortunately, this is all i can recall. it's easily been like 15+ years since i read the book, but for some reason i started thinking about it recently and for the life of me i cannot remember what it's called. any possible leads would help. thanks! (i'm in the usa, btw, and the book was also set somewhere in the states.)
