AIO for being hurt and disappointed by my boyfriend’s Valentine’s Day effort and lack of follow-through?

I (21F) have been dating my boyfriend (21M) for over a year. For Valentine’s Day, I put together a gift box for him about two weeks in advance — two nice sweaters, things to make his favorite drink, and a utility knife I knew he’d use. I also made dinner reservations and planned a trip to the botanical gardens.

For weeks beforehand, he kept telling me he was planning something special for me, which made me really excited and feel like he cared about making the day meaningful too.

On Valentine’s Day, while I was getting ready, he went to Target and was gone for about 2.5 hours. We ended up missing our botanical gardens plans because I had to go back to Target myself to grab something I had forgotten, even though I had asked him to get it while he was there.

When he came back, he had a cheap bottle of wine I don’t drink, his favorite chocolate (not mine), and some flowers. He told me this was my “Valentine’s basket.”

I appreciated the flowers, but I felt really hurt. It felt last-minute and thoughtless compared to the effort I put into his gifts and planning our day. What made it worse was that he had promised multiple times that he was doing something special.

He also told me that day that he was “too sick” to really do much — but since then he’s been skiing every day and making time to see his friends. This is a pattern: he prioritizes plans with friends and flakes on me, especially when I really need him.

This isn’t a one-time issue. He often says he’ll plan things or put in effort and then doesn’t follow through. I’m starting to feel like I’m carrying the relationship and constantly lowering my expectations just to avoid being disappointed. I don’t need expensive gifts — I just want effort, consideration, and reliability.

AIO for being upset and wondering if this is a bigger problem than just Valentine’s Day?
