Could you argue that a traumatic event led to a temporary loss of sanity during the traumatic event, and not be held legally responsible for any actions you took during that event?

Disclaimer: i am in no way involved in any sort of circumstances like the one describe below. Just something I thought about in the shower this morning. Not asking for legal advice.

So here's some more context. Say, for example, you walk in and you find someone doing something horrific to one of your loved ones. Like your wife, or child. And seeing this puts you into a fit of rage that causes you to go over the threshold of defense of another, and kill that person. Kind of like what happened with Cooper in the second season of Land man.

Could you argue, that the trauma of seeing something so horrific happen to a loved one. Caused you to temporarily lose your mental faculties and sense of sanity. Thus you cannot be held responsible for your actions during that temporary loss of sanity?
