**Matval** \- AI-powered grocery assistant for Swedish supermarkets

# What it does

Ask any AI assistant natural-language questions about products from 5 Swedish supermarket chains (Coop, Hemköp, ICA, Mathem, Willys):

* *"Which Greek yogurt has the most protein?"*
* *"Is sourdough bread in stock at ICA?"*
* *"Compare chicken breast prices across all stores"*
* *"Show me all gluten-free bread options"*
* *"Find high-protein snacks under 30 kr"*
* *"Plan a week of vegetarian meals from in-stock products"*

# How it works

1. **5 Python scrapers** pull \~150K products (with nutrition, availability, prices) into PostgreSQL
2. **MCP server** exposes 9 tools for searching, browsing, and comparing
3. **Connect any AI assistant** (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.) and start asking questions

Everything runs locally with Docker Compose.

# Demo queries

**Nutrition:** "Which yogurts have >15g protein per 100g?" **Availability:** "Is Risifrutti rice pudding in stock anywhere?" **Browsing:** "Show me all products in the plant-based category" **Price:** "Where is oat milk cheapest right now?" **Combined:** "Find high-protein breakfast options under 20 SEK at Coop"

# Quickstart

    cd matval
    cp .env.example .env
    # Edit .env - set POSTGRES_PASSWORD
    docker compose up -d
    docker compose run --rm scraper coop

Connect MCP client to `http://localhost:8000/mcp`

# Tech

* Python (Scrapy) for web scraping
* PostgreSQL 16 for storage
* MCP server for AI integration
* Docker Compose for orchestration
* Respects robots.txt (crawl-delay, visit-time)

# Real-world impact

What used to take 30 minutes of tab-switching between grocery websites now takes one question. Great for:

* Meal planning around nutritional goals
* Checking stock before going to the store
* Discovering products in categories you've never browsed
* Price optimization

**Stack:** Python • PostgreSQL • Docker • MCP

# Store-Agnostic

While currently for Swedish supermarkets, the architecture can easily accommodate stores from any country. Just add a new scraper the shared pipeline and database handle the rest.

# Coming Soon

* GUI for non-technical users
* Batch retrieval to reduce token costs
* Recipe suggestions based on cheap ingredients

Matval (Food Choice): Ask AI "which yogurt has the most protein?" across 5 Swedish supermarkets (store-agnostic)
