My players see combat mechanically, how can I get them invested in the STORY of combat

2040's Discussion

so to explain the title a bit. My players and I have never been particularly a fan of combat. Weve started having a bit more fun recently but still have a problem where combat takes us out of the world. outside of combat we are "in the world", narrating our actions and being invested in the "story" as much as the results. but the second we enter combat it's "that misses. that hits. 8 damage. " "alright Vanessa what do you do. "I'm going to shoot. that misses. that hits. 13 damage and a critinj". The game starts being a wargame and stops being a role-playing game. how would you stop this? I've been considering rolling *for* my players to bring the anticipation back, but that seems like it's a bit too far.

Part of the problem I think is that my players know their own weapon's range tables. since we all know our range tables by the time I as a DM get a chance to actually narrate their hit or miss they've already rolled another round and determined it's damage.
