Is it acceptable to take your shoes off in a cafe?

Today we had a customer in our tearoom, she had clearly been hiking. She ordered a tea then sat on our sofa, took her boots and socks off and sat her socks on the coffee table, then moved her feet up on to the sofa. When I served her tea I politely asked if she could put her shoes back on. She queried why and I told her it was very hygienic especially when we are serving food. When she left she told me I was rude and she didn't understand why she couldn't take her shoes off. Am I wrong or is she?
