Where do you source your inventory? Closeout/liquidation company looking to understand the Whatnot seller ecosystem

Whatnot - Seller

Hey everyone, I run a closeout and liquidation business in the Midwest. We deal in electronics, consumer goods, and overstock, all brand new items, mostly reselling through eBay and Amazon.

I recently discovered Whatnot and have been watching some live auctions. I'm honestly kind of blown away by how active the marketplace is. A lot of sellers are moving the same type of inventory we deal in, but also a ton of clothing, which we have access to but have always avoided since it's not a great fit for eBay or Amazon.

For those of you who sell on Whatnot regularly:

  • Where are you currently sourcing your inventory? Liquidation auctions, direct from retailers, pallet companies, local auction houses?
  • What's your biggest pain point with sourcing? Consistency, quality, finding enough volume?
  • Do any of you buy wholesale from other resellers or liquidation companies, or is everyone mostly sourcing directly?
  • For those doing clothing or consumer goods specifically, are you finding enough consistent supply to keep your shows stocked?
  • Is there any interest in unbranded clothing/goods, or is it strictly name brand stuff?

I'm asking because I'm exploring whether there's a fit for us to work with Whatnot sellers as a supply channel. We move a lot of volume and always have excess inventory that could work well for live auction formats. But I want to understand how sellers actually operate before going down that road.

Happy to answer questions about the liquidation/closeout side of things too if anyone's curious.
