Players not returning to bench?

Hey. So I upgraded to NHL 26 from NHL 24. I'm playing season mode as usual and the players on the ice just don't seem to want to go to the bench in 26. Normally when I dumped a puck behind the goal of the other team in 24, the players would all go for a formation change except the one I'm controlling. Not in this game. 2-3 players skate into the opponent's zone after a dump with 0% stamina and only one defender changes at most. I just had a whole second period (set for 3 minutes in real time) with only my first formation, I kept dumping the puck but they just wouldn't change despite even manually selecting the second formations with circle and square. It was basically a whole third of just icing the puck or dumping it from the red line hoping they would finally change, but they never did. There wasn't a single offside or freeze, basically no whistle chance to switch formations either (not that unusual when you have 3-minute periods, but the formation changes then become even more important). Is this just a me problem? Do I have to tweak something?

(Tagged as discussion because I'm curious if I'm doing something wrong. I'm not ranting, I'm actually somehow winning 1:0, it's just that the enjoyment of the game fumbles when all you do is fight off fresh opponents with tired players.)
