Is it normal for ‘friends’ to constantly make you feel like shit?

Aaj Ka Rant  💢

Pata hai aaj kya hua.... I’m 19M and I’ve always been insecure about how I look. I don’t have great facial features, I’m not very fair skinned, and I’m overweight. Basically I consider myself average or maybe below average.

So today one of my friend’s sister got married and there was a cocktail party. Plan was to meet at his place and then go together in one car.

The moment I reached his house, him, his elder brother, and two other friends started making fun of my clothes.

I KNOW I didn’t wear something extraordinary or super stylish. But it wasn’t horrible either. Still they went:

“Eww what is this?”

“Why are you wearing a shrug, that’s for girls.”

“Did you borrow this from your mom?”

“Don’t you have good clothes?”

“You look so bad, why can’t you dress properly?”

Then they started commenting on my skin tone saying I look darker than usual. Like bhai obviously I go to college and step out in the sun, unlike them who mostly stay indoors.

I genuinely felt like leaving and going home, but I didn’t want to create a scene because it was his sister’s wedding. So I just stayed quiet and took everything.

Then it got worse.

They started making fun of me about a girl who is my friend and someone I used to have a crush on earlier.

Stuff like: “Why will she even choose you?”

“Have you looked at yourself?”

“You keep giving her flowers, she doesn’t even like you back.”

(Context: She loves flowers, so whenever we hang out I get her a small bouquet. I don’t expect anything in return. I just do it because I like making her happy.)

Then they brought religion into it and said she’ll never marry me anyway because we’re from different religions.

At that point I just shut down completely.

After everything they said “Arre bro don’t mind, we’re just pulling your leg.”

But pulling someone’s leg once or twice is different.

Doing it constantly, targeting insecurities, and humiliating someone in front of others is not a joke.

I came back home, locked my room, tried to sleep, and ended up crying.

I already know I’m not good looking. But does that mean people get a free pass to make me feel like I’m worthless?

Right now I just feel like a loser and I don’t know what to do with these feelings.
