Sandpaper Grit

I want to repaint my '02 Dakota, and I'm wanting to try rattle can since it's a daily driver and is a less expensive route than having it professionally painted/wrapped. I've been watching a lot of videos and feel like I'd be able to get the hang of it, but I'm confused about what sandpaper grit I should use to remove the clear coat and surface dents and scratches.
