Duel timelines

How does everyone feel about duel timelines? Why do they seem so prevalent in the genre, especially in books regarding women.

I personally feel like they completely ruin the immersion of a historical fiction. I always find the modern protagonist is not engaging enough for me to not skim over the chapter wanting to get back to what I actually picked up the book for, the historical fiction.
