Liquidate Investments or Use Loans?
Hey everyone,
I’m about to start med school and tuition is $71k/year. I’m waiting on my FAFSA offer, but assuming I get $50k in unsubsidized loans, I’m trying to figure out the smartest strategy for paying tuition while minimizing debt after graduation.
Here’s my situation:
• I have $100k invested in VTI.
• I don’t want to withdraw my investments if possible, but I also want to minimize debt and interest accrual.
I could either:
1. Liquidate part/all of my investments to pay tuition and reduce loans.
2. Take loans only for tuition and leave my investments to continue growing.
If you were in my shoes before starting med school, what approach would you take? How did you balance keeping investments vs minimizing med school debt?
Looking for practical advice and reasoning from people who have been in a similar position.
