Feeling hopeless :( - How to use this year effectively to figure out my next steps in Uni

Career Advice

For context, I struggled academically in primary and high school. I remember my parents telling me that I was going to grow up and be stupid and I was constantly bullied and belited by peers and teachers causing serious mental struggles. I actually ended up scoring an Atar in the mid 80s which is viewed quite good in Australia. Despite this achievement, I internalised A LOT of this rhetoric and had a low self worth contributing to ideas that I was 1. stupid and destined to fail in life 2. That I needed to upkeep this narrative as I was so used to applying others perceptions of me to my identity and understanding of self. I ended up just applying for a Bachelor in communication majoring in social media & digital and strategic as it felt attainable and confirmed this narrative that I felt I needed to continue.

Ill be graduating with this degree this year at 20 years old. It has hit me just now, as I am about to enter my final year, that I am not stupid and could have picked a more intellectually challenging degree. Nothing about the core communication classes such as social media marketing, creative advertising etc ever interested me, rather made me cringe at how vapid these classes were. It genuinely hurted me having to design social media posts or strategies lmao. Additionally, all I hear in the corporate communication world is that they are filled with ditsy gals. I however, am on the spectrum so am naturally quite blunt, always have a straight face or come off as serious and struggled to get along with peers in my University classes so cant mesh well with people like this. However, I actually have always fantastically excelled in presenting especially in front of large crowds and can command respect well.

I recognise that graduating with a bachelors at 20 is young and that I now have time to do post graduate studies in something more challenging I just have 0 idea of what I could pivot into. Its about wanting the best for myself, wanting something intellectually challenging and most importantly…employable! I am open for post graduate diplomas that take 2 years. Some elective classes such as the social life of technology I found really interesting. I liked the more philosophical discourse around technology such AI’s ethics, policy etc and what social media means for society.

Everyone is either telling me I’m cooked or to go do a law degree but I don’t fckn know if I’d like law I’m so lost guys. Or people say your job doesn’t exist. Sometimes I wonder if I even like those topics I brought up I’m feeling so hopeless. I don’t understand how some people just knew what to study :(

I understand that I have the capacity to self reflect and should have done this ages ago in which I would have made I smarter choices. I recognise that I fcked up by picking a dumb degree but again I emphasise that I didn’t understand myself at all which skewed certain choices I made. Thanks guys.
