How to not suck as a mage?

I’m trying Morrowind as a mage with the Atronach Birthsign. The issue is, I’m super underpowered. I don’t know how to make good custom spells, and I just die to random enemies. How can I actually be a strong competent mage? I’m only level 5 right now so I have a lot to learn.
