Nervous about Rite of Election, Scrutiny, and Baptism
This Sunday I am going to our diocese’s main church that’s about an hour away from my parish that I’ve been attending OCIA at since September. I’ll be there for the Rite of Election to sign my name into the special book with my sponsor who is my OCIA leader and also the deacon of my church. I’m so nervous, I have terrible social anxiety and the thought of getting up in front of everyone is so scary. Especially when it will come to the Scrutinies starting next month, standing infront of everyone at my parish during mass. I know it’s a good thing but I feel so stage fright and scared of it, like I’m more nervous than excited. I am glad there is one other catechumen in OCIA with me so I won’t be entirely alone but it feels nerve wracking.
It’s such a huge commitment too- baptism feels like such a huge monumental step toward Christ in such a serious way. I’m both excited but also so so shy of it all
Anyone else have this experience? 2 years ago I was too scared to attend any church and now I’ve been lead down this path of denomination searching, coming to Catholicism (back to the roots of my father’s family), and here I am, on this lifelong path about to metaphorically “cross the starting line of the long road ahead”. It’s surreal but also frightening because of how huge it all feels, how much it means, and what a commitment it is.
