Free/cheap generic fantasy games? (not Ironsworn)
I’ve played a bit of D&D in the past with a group (though I don’t own the rulebook or understand the rules fully) and I’m looking for something that has that same Generic Fantasy feel. D&D is very rules heavy and confusing to me and I’d rather not play it solo.
I’m new to solo play and I’ve looked into more specific genre titles (pirate borg, monster of the week, brindlewood bay, cy_borg, etc) but I’d love to find something that’s a bit wider in story scope, if that makes sense? Because D&D is the only TTRPG experience I have, I figure something with a similar vibe might ease me into playing solo.
Ironsworn is an obvious suggestion but it’s a little too dark, gritty fantasy for me, I’m looking for something that can be used for both lighthearted and serious moments. Party dynamics are awesome and I hope to create a small found family. I also love magic and want to find something with good spell casting features.
Drakonym seems to fit a lot of what I want but unfortunately I don’t think it’s out in print yet.
So any ideas? It can be anything that’s specifically solo (preferable) or able to be adjusted for solo play. And because I’m a full-time student, I’m rather strapped for cash so free or cheap-ish games would be ideal :D
