Traditional contacts vs modern dailies: what am i missing?
I was at my optometrist for an eye checkup when he asked if i’d like to transition from traditional lenses to the more modern daily and monthly wear ones. I was stunned because I thought the traditional ones were the safest and most viable option for me. This led me down a rabbit hole of research and here’s what I found.
The traditional ones I have are one of the older models of contact lenses, the ones that are almost non-permeable and are durable. The downside to this is that they are mostly one size fits all and requires a strict regimen for care and sustainability. I mean, at some point my whole day became one big eye care routine.
The modern ones on the other hand are specifically made to suit individual eye needs and come with way more breathability. Daily disposables mean you literally just throw them away at the end of the day with zero cleaning required. Monthly ones still need some care but nothing like the rigid routine I was dealing with. They're also made from newer materials that let more oxygen reach your eye, which apparently reduces infection risk and keeps your eyes more healthy overall.
I ended up trying some cheap daily lenses I found on AliBaba just to test out the concept, but my optometrist warned me that's risky since contact lenses should be properly fitted and prescribed. He's probably right, but I wanted to see if the convenience was worth switching before committing to the expensive branded ones. So far, I'm genuinely considering making the change permanently.
