The ghosts of Harry Potter

It’s ok that dumbeldore never found the chamber of secrets because it was in a girls toilet but how come the ghosts never found it? Like you are going to be in this castle for ever why not explore. And how come moaning mertile never saw Ginny opening the chamber either? Is there something I am missing?
