AITAH for ending a 5–6 year friendship because I felt she was manipulative and punishing me?
I (22F) had a close friend (22F) for about 5–6 years. We were always friends, but we became really close in the last few years. We used to talk every day, mostly on Snapchat, and hung out a lot when we lived in the same place.
I lived in Saudi with my parents until I finished school. After 12th grade, I moved to India for college while she stayed in Saudi. That’s when things started getting difficult.
She has always needed a lot of emotional support. She has family issues and is often in a negative headspace, which I tried to understand and be there for. But here’s where the issue started:
On Snapchat, if she sent me a message and I didn’t open or reply within 15–20 minutes (because I was in class, out with friends, etc.), she would delete the message. When I asked what she had sent, she would refuse to tell me. Even if I asked repeatedly for 20–30 minutes, she wouldn’t say. Sometimes she would say “I wanted to talk” but if I replied a bit late, she’d say “Never mind, not anymore.”
It felt like I was being punished for not being instantly available. I tried explaining that I had classes and a life in college, but she would just say she didn’t want to talk about it anymore. Eventually, I stopped asking what deleted messages were about because it was exhausting to beg for information she wouldn’t share anyway.
After that, she started saying I had “changed” and that I wasn’t the same anymore.
Another issue was that she was very negative about my relationship. Anytime I shared something about my partner, she would say things like “Boys are always bad,” or predict something would go wrong. She openly said she doesn’t believe in love. It got to the point where I stopped sharing my relationship updates because I didn’t want constant negativity. Then she accused me of hiding things and “changing.”
The final straw happened a few months ago when I was visiting Saudi. She invited me and several other families over for dinner. The next day I had a flight back to India, so I went shopping with my family for essentials and reached her house around 9–9:30 PM (which isn’t that unusual there, dinners often run late).
She told me, “You came so late. I’m not going to talk to you.” I genuinely thought she was joking.
She wasn’t.
For the entire 3–4 hours I was there, she barely spoke to me. When I tried to talk, she acted cold and dismissive. She also made negative comments about my relationship in front of others (“All couples lose spark over time”) and even made a random comment about my accent while I was talking to someone else.
It honestly felt humiliating and childish.
After that night, I stopped texting her. She didn’t text me either. Months later, she messaged saying I ended the friendship just because she “got mad one day.”
That upset me. I told her I wasn’t mad about one day — I was tired of the constant guilt-tripping, deleted messages, negativity, and feeling like I was being punished whenever I wasn’t available on her schedule.
Since then, we haven’t talked properly. She sometimes likes my stories and wished me on my birthday, but that’s it.
I do miss her sometimes. We were close for years. But I also feel like the friendship was emotionally draining and one-sided.
AITA for walking away instead of trying harder to fix it?
