Splitstaff skill Serpent Sweep not working on controller. Help.

When pressing guard + holding down circle it uses my guardian spirit skill and wont let me use this move no matter what. Any tips to make this skill actually work? Is it my controller custom settings screwing it up? I haven't seen anything on this online which is odd because I figured alot of people would have this issue.
