Parent Day?
Does anyone else’s school have Parent Day? It’s a whole school day where parents can come in and stay start to finish. While, as a parent, I can definitely see the appeal, but as a teacher, it’s EXHAUSTING—like being observed for a whole entire day. We have very involved families and I am thankful for that and almost every student has at least 1 if not 2 parents in attendance. And many do stay all day long. Adding that many extra people in classrooms makes even simple logistics a challenge. Add to that we already only have 45 minutes of planning time that is almost always monopolized by parents wanting to chat or conference about their student. Admin always says “Just tell them it’s your planning and then go to the teachers lounge to get away” But in practice it comes across TJ parents as rude. And students whose parents cannot attend are bummed all day long that no one is there for them. It’s so tricky to balance everything! We’ve talked to admin about the challenges and would they consider making it a half day thing and they absolutely do not want to budge. Every idea we pitched on trying to make the day a little easier on teachers (extra recess, an assembly of some sort, etc) has been met with no consideration at all. I guess I’m just curious if this is a thing anywhere else and if so how does the day run? We also do the same thing for grandparents—and it’s wall to wall grandparents. But we have an assembly that day which helps.
