Constant nausea , drops at night ?
Hi everyone — I wanted to explain a symptom I’ve been experiencing and see if anyone else relates, because it’s honestly one of the hardest parts of this whole thing.
Since getting sick (post-viral dysautonomia), I’ve had this constant off, uneasy feeling in my stomach — not exactly normal nausea like a stomach bug, but more like my gut feels “wrong” or unsettled.
Because of this:
• Food rarely feels appealing.
• Eating feels forced rather than natural.
• I often have to push myself to get food down even when I know I need it.
• My stomach feels tight or sensitive rather than hungry.
Interestingly, late at night the nausea often lifts and suddenly I can eat more normally, which makes me think this isn’t a structural gut problem but more of a nervous system regulation issue.
My neurologists theory is that after the viral illness, the autonomic nervous system (brainstem + vagus nerve) became dysregulated.
When the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) system is overactive:
• digestion slows or becomes hypersensitive
• appetite signals are suppressed
• the stomach feels tense or nauseated.
Basically, the body is acting like it’s in survival mode instead of “rest and digest.”
Later at night, when sympathetic tone naturally drops and the parasympathetic system kicks in more, my gut suddenly feels calmer and I can eat — which seems to support this theory.
….
I’m curious:
• Has anyone else had this constant “off” gut feeling rather than classic nausea?
• Did your appetite eventually come back as your nervous system settled?
Would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences — this symptom is invisible but honestly exhausting.
