Took .5 mg of xanax for the first time and felt nothing, why?

Yesterday me and my boyfriend both took .5 mg of xanax. I got 2 pills from my friend who has a prescription and each pill was 1 mg. After about an hour, my boyfriend started getting really drowsy and nodded off so I took him to bed, but I didn't feel anything even long after he fell asleep. Should I take more next time to feel a high? Or is there something wrong with me? Also what is the high supposed to feel like?
