AITA for not wanting my husband’s friend and his girlfriend to stay at our apartment all weekend?
My husband and I moved to a walkable city earlier this year, which has been really exciting for us. In the fall, his best friend came to visit and stayed Friday through Monday. I genuinely wanted him to feel welcome I bought special groceries because he has food allergies, we planned things to do, and we basically spent the whole weekend showing him around.
It wasn’t just a chill “hang out at home” kind of visit. It was full-on hosting mode the entire time. By Sunday night I was honestly exhausted. I like his friend, but entertaining for three straight days took a lot out of me, and I didn’t realize how drained I’d feel until it was over.
Then Monday came, and my husband had forgotten he had a work event. I work from home, so I ended up being the one there while trying to focus on my job. It felt awkward and stressful having someone in the apartment while I was on calls and trying to get things done. I didn’t feel like I could fully relax or fully work.
Now the friend wants to come back, this time with his girlfriend, for the same Friday–Monday stretch. We live in a moderate-sized apartment with one bathroom it’s comfortable for us, but it’s not some huge space where everyone can spread out. I told my husband I’m completely fine with them staying Friday through Sunday, but I’d really prefer they get a hotel Sunday night because I work Monday and need Sunday to reset and mentally prepare for the week.
When my husband relayed that, the friend said something like, “Well what if we just leave Monday morning?” which makes me feel like he’s not really hearing what the issue was last time.
I’m not trying to ban them from visiting. I just don’t want to feel overwhelmed in my own home or stuck juggling work and hosting again. But now I’m wondering if I’m being too rigid about it.
AITA?
