Permanent weakness? Possibility to ski again?
When I (M 23) was 16, I was hitting that orange justice too hard (yes, that's actually what happened ๐) and dislocated my left kneecap (it went to the outside of my leg on the left.) I got it popped back in within less than a minute after it happened, as there was a doctor there.
I iced it and walked on crutches for about 3 1/2 days thereafter. I never actually got an MRI or anything or did any PT. I started walking again about 4 days after it happened while wearing a drugstore knee brace. I dislocated it again like a day or two after I started walking on it again (being a dumb shit) by trying to imitate what I did to dislocate it the first time (but I was barely moving my knee.) I got it popped back in within about 10 seconds, and I have not have any problems with it since.
So, again, I never did any actual PT; when I look down at my legs, the quad muscles directly above my left knee look noticeably smaller (not a lot, but it is noticeable) compared to the right. If I did PT exercises now and/or started lifting weights (which I have never had a problem doing even after the injury) could I restore the muscle to what it used to be? Did not doing PT right after the injury leave it permanently susceptible to re-injury/dislocation? Again, I have not had any problems since and it doesn't seem to be any weaker than my right.
This brings me to my next question: I had skied from the time I was about 8 years old up until the injury, so it has been YEARS since I have hit the slopes. Skiing is something I really enjoy, but was too afraid to go back to after my dislocation. I never injured myself skiing or had any instability or dislocations while I was doing it, and I am a clutz with joints susceptible to dislocation (dislocated my left shoulder in ninth grade after falling on it on a gym floor while it was completely extended while playing volleyball, and had nursemaid's elbow [just a dislocated elbow] twice as a toddler. I have actually had significantly more problems with my shoulder since that dislocation than my knee ever gave me.) Anyway, how much would I have to strengthen my knee to be sure I could go back to skiing without the possibility of a dislocation?
Thanks! :)
