Maintaining galvanized maille in a humid environment?
I did a pretty thorough museum wax job on my coif and shirt (two separate pieces, 35,000 rings, 3/8ID, 14ga) about 2 years ago, but it's probably time to give it a cleaning and re-wax.
I've seen suggestions that boiling maille will de-grease and de-wax..... I'm not so sure I want water in contact with butted rings. I could do a coating of WD-40 or similar, but this piece hangs in my living room and I'd rather avoid the smell and the transfer of oil to everything that passes by.
My preference would be a cleaning that removes the dust and the old layer of wax so the new layer has something to adhere to. I've also considered building a display case that can be evacuated of air (by pumping in argon welding gas) but that's a pretty extreme solution.
