Starting goalie late

I’m a freshman and I play close d and ssdm (my main position is close d) and my best friend is a goalie that plays on all 3 of my teams but I want to pick up the position, but I’m afraid it would be pointless as he is good and I just want to try to start playing the position. Any tips?
