Moved from TX to NY mid-year (June 2025) – Tax refund and deductions
Hey everyone,
I recently moved from Texas to New York in June 2025 for a new job. Since this is my first time moving between states (especially between one with no income tax and one with... a lot), I have a few questions about how to handle my upcoming tax filing and if I'm missing out on any refunds.
My Situation:
Move Date: June 2025 (Permanent move).
Texas: Lived and worked there from Jan–May.
New York: Living and working here from June–Dec.
Transport: I paid to have my personal car transported via open trailer to NY.
A few specific questions:
Part-Year Resident Filing: Since Texas has no state income tax but NY does, how does the "Part-Year Resident" filing work? Do I only pay NY tax on the money I earned after I moved in June, or does NY look at my total annual income to determine my tax bracket?
Federal vs. State Differences: Are there any major federal changes I should know about for 2025 because of a cross-country move? I know Texas was simple (just Federal), but now I’m seeing NY State tax and potentially NYC City tax?
Car Transport Deduction: Can I get any tax credit or refund for the cost of shipping my car via trailer? It was a significant out-of-pocket expense for the job move.
Refund Odds: Is it likely I’ll get a refund, or should I be adjusting my withholdings immediately so I don’t owe a massive bill next April?
Would appreciate any advice.
