Balcony food garden in a rented house.

👩🏻‍🌾 Recommendations wanted

TLDR: I rent a house that has a balcony facing the sunset. I am wanting some advise on how to properly cultivate a food garden without risking seeds spreading to the front garden below. I would like some advise on how to fix that, and what plants are good to grow.

My property is owned by someone who takes pride in his landscaping and likes a clean garden, hence my aversion to create a veggie patch in the ground. The front of the house has astroturf and my worry is that if i create a food garden in the balcony, the seeds will fall and start growing in there.
Are there any solutions other than weeding weekly?

I am also open to any advise on what foods are best to grow (bush, vine, root, anything rlly) in this current situation. it gets around 3.5 to 5 hrs of sun a day (depending on the season) so i know my options are quite limited. the sunlight I do get is quite harsh, though.
