How to get past royal waterways?

I know this is kinda stupid as the game is a metroidvania, but I'm so confused. I want to discover other places but I'm only going in circles. I know one way is to beat the dung defender but I REALLY don't want to do that. So far my abilities are up to desolate dive. Is there anyway to "progress" without having to beat the dung defender?
