why did making my habit embarrassingly small actually work when everything else failed
honestly the one that changed everything for me was just drinking a glass of water before i even looked at my phone in the morning.
sounds stupid, i know. i spent months trying to build this elaborate morning routine — workout, meditation, journaling, cold shower, the whole thing. burned out in like two weeks every single time.
but the water thing? that stuck. and somehow it started pulling other habits along with it. i'd drink the water, feel slightly more awake, and then actually want to move around a bit before sitting down. nothing crazy. just pacing around for a few minutes.
the big thing i learned is that habits fail when they require willpower right out of the gate. the ones that actually last are the ones that feel almost embarrassingly small. so small that skipping them feels weirder than just doing them.
i also started stacking them. water → open the curtains → make bed. each takes under a minute. but the combination signals to my brain that the day has started and i'm not going back to sleep.
been at it about eight months now. the elaborate stuff is still a dream lol. but those tiny morning anchors have made me noticeably less chaotic during the day. less reactive, i think is the word.
anyone else figured out the minimum viable version of a habit that actually stuck?
