22F Struggling with class/financial gap and mismatched ambition in an otherwise loving relationship with 23M

Relationships

I, 22F, am in a long-term relationship (3, almost 4 years) with someone, 23M, I genuinely love and feel emotionally safe with. He's kind, affectionate, loyal, and consistent in ways that matter. That said, I've been grappling with a few concerns that I can't seem to shake, and I'm trying to understand whether these are valid incompatibilities or something I need to work through internally.

The major issue is a significant class and financial gap. I come from (and aspire to) a more polished, aspirational lifestyle; better exposure, higher standards of living, and a strong emphasis on upward mobility. My boyfriend's family is financially comfortable but modest, and they don't place the same importance on refinement, presentation, or long-term wealth-building.

I worry about how this gap might show up in the future, such as social settings, family dynamics, housing, lifestyle expectations, and how others (including my own family) might perceive the mismatch. I sometimes feel anxious imagining a future where I have to constantly adjust, compromise, or explain.

The minor but recurring issue is his lack of inner drive, particularly around self-improvement. He's intelligent and capable, but he doesn't consistently push himself, whether that's ambition, discipline, or even staying fit and taking care of his health. I don't expect perfection or a hyper-competitive mindset, but I do value momentum, growth, and self-respect.

He does verbalise his ambitions and desire to do more a lot. And he does invest, read and stuff. But at times, it feels like I'm more future-oriented than he is. It's like he wants to start business but doesn't take any proactive step towards it, he doesn't talk about plans of getting his masters (we are currently lawyers). I know this may sound odd but his lack of drive makes me want to stay static too but partly it's also because I don't want to outgrow him.

What makes this harder is that he does treat me well emotionally, and I fear that walking away might mean losing genuine love for concerns that feel "material" or "practical," yet they deeply affect how I imagine my life unfolding.

I'm torn between:

•accepting that love doesn't always come packaged with alignment in class, ambition, or lifestyle, or •acknowledging that these differences may lead to long-term resentment if ignored.

I'm looking for perspective, especially from people who've faced class differences or ambition mismatches in relationships. Did it work out? Did it grow into resentment? Or did your values eventually align?

TL;DR: I love my boyfriend and he treats me well emotionally, but I'm struggling with two mismatches: a major class/financial gap that affects my vision of future lifestyle, family dynamics, and social comfort, and a smaller but persistent concern about his lack of inner drive (ambition, discipline, staying fit). I'm torn between accepting these differences in the name of love or acknowledging that ignoring them may lead to long-term resentment.
