The noise upstairs is genuinely ruining my life
I am coming here for reassurance and a possible solution more than I am for anything else, but I would not mind being told that I am overreacting or that there are solutions readily available to me that I'm just not seeing. I will do anything to make it stop. I am in my early twenties and live alone in a one bedroom, and since moving out of my parents' home two years prior to now I had been aptly satisfied with my new peaceful living situation free of the usual screaming and animosity. I suffer from a myriad of chronic illnesses, and because of this I primarily work from home.
One of my most debilitating symptoms is a set of full-body spasms that rise from my abdomen up to my head and neck along with dizzy and fainting spells, linking to onset nausea. I have determined after a few years of this that they're triggered more often by poor sleep, and for the first year of living here they were mitigated as my neighbors were very reasonable with the noise coming from their unit and I only really heard them during the day as they showered or slight floor creaks. I now get them daily atop my other symptoms, and I don't have enough money to move.
I wholeheartedly understand that noise is a normal and natural occurence- especially in an apartment building and that children have a harder time regulating their emotions and need an outlet to express excitement and energy, but ever since July of 2025 when I heard these new neighbors move their furniture in at 11pm, every night has been pure horror. For six months, I let it pass as I had an irregular sleep schedule regardless and spent most days bed ridden after work anyway, but when I had to leave my job due to worsening health I started prioritizing my rest and found that throughout the day, my neighbors were incredibly loud which was no issue- but between the hours of 8pm and 1am they would grow SIGNIFICANTLY louder to the point I feared theyd come through the floor and often sounded like they were inside my unit.
With the stomping came domestic disputes, screaming, crying, and constant running as multiple children seemingly older than toddlers put their entire body weight on the floors. I started emailing my leasing office about this in January as I was due to start a new job, and have sent three in total as of this month. Following my second email, my neighbors seemingly began to retaliate, starting to scream IN UNISON and stomp even harder upstairs and the night before I started my new job I finally broke and hit the ceiling to see if they could hear me too. They did, and the woman upstairs used some grand expletives towards me through the floor. Talking to them is not in the books. My leasing office won't respond to any of my emails, or my request to possibly pay to move into a new unit when I get the funds. I don't know what to do.
