I (27M) broke up with my ex (25F) a month ago after 1.5 years together. Is it too soon to initiate something with someone new?

About a month ago, I (27M) ended my 1.5-year relationship with my ex (25F) after I found out she had cheated earlier in the relationship and lied about it. What hurt most wasn’t just the cheating — it was realizing she had misrepresented herself and her character in order to “lock me in.” When I discovered the truth, it completely changed how I saw her.

I broke up with her shortly after finding out. At first I felt intense anger and betrayal. Over the past month, the love and attraction I once felt have mostly faded, replaced by disappointment and clarity. I’ve been focusing on myself, processing everything, and trying to move forward in a healthy way.

Recently, I met a new girl (around 25F) who I find genuinely attractive. It’s not just physical — I like her energy and the way she carries herself. I’ve been considering initiating a conversation and seeing where it goes.

But I’m conflicted.

On one hand, I feel like it’s normal to move on and that attraction to someone new doesn’t automatically mean I’m avoiding healing. On the other hand, I worry:

  • Is this genuine interest, or am I subconsciously trying to fill a void left by my breakup?
  • Is one month too soon after a 1.5-year relationship?
  • Would it be unfair to her if I’m not as emotionally ready as I think I am?

I have no intention of using anyone as a rebound or as a “healing project.” I don’t want to drag unresolved baggage into someone else’s life. At the same time, I don’t want fear to prevent me from meeting someone potentially great just because my last relationship ended badly.

For those who’ve been in similar situations — how did you know you were actually ready to date again versus just distracting yourself? Is it okay to casually initiate something and just be mindful of your emotional state, or should I give myself more time before even opening that door?
