First time Animal Crossing player looking for some tips

I started playing Animal Crossing for the very first time today (and by first time I mean first time of any Animal Crossing game ever). I know I'm very behind but I'm looking forward to getting into it. I was just hoping for some tips for a beginner. I got done with the tutorial and did some wandering around, catching a couple fish and shaking some trees. I'm just wondering if there's anything else I should be doing beyond that or if atp I'm just building up supplies and recipes.
